Tim Long was given a toy piano when he was three. He played it so much that he wore it out. By the age of five he was playing a real piano. At ten years old he was working on the saxophone and the flute. The clarinet arrived when he was twelve, then the oboe, trumpet, euphonium, piccolo, marimba and the violin - by the time he was sixteen. We were looking for a place to talk at American Indian Community House, and as we walked it hit me: I had seen him several years ago dancing at a Thunderbird Powwow in Queens. I recalled being taken with the fluidity of his movement, his immaculate timing, and especially with the commitment he brought to the dance. Then I remembered I used to work with his sister Lavonne, who often mentioned what a fine dancer her brother was. "I know you!" I said to Lance.
